September 2017
Dear Parents and Guardians,
To all our new students and families, Welcome to St. John the Apostle School! For our returning students, Welcome Back! We are looking forward to a year full of exploring, discovering and learning and most importantly having fun! Our goal is to create a rich, positive and stimulating learning environment that allows your child to grow emotionally, physically, spiritually and academically. Our ‘Meet the Teacher Night’ is on September 13th at 6:30 pm. We look forward to seeing you there!
Below is some helpful information to make the coming school year a success.
The children are encouraged to dress and undress themselves – therefore clothes that are easy to put on and take off are recommended (i.e. Velcro running shoes). It would be appreciated if the children could bring a pair of indoor running shoes and also a change of clothes (underwear, socks, pants, and shirt) in a plastic Ziploc bag with their name on all pieces of clothing. The children will leave their shoes at school and change into them daily. Please label all of your child’s removable clothing, boots, shoes, and lunch boxes. Many bags, shoes, coats and containers look alike.
We ask that any changes in your child’s routine please be explained with a note. This includes such things as being picked up at school by you or someone who we don’t know . Additionally, please keep us informed of any illness, medication, accidents, etc., which may affect your child’s performance at school. This will help us make the school experience a positive one. When your child is absent, please phone the school before 9:15 a.m. (613-828-0644).
The children will be having a snack twice a day and lunch as well. Parents are asked to send nutritious snacks (fruits, raw vegetables, cheese, etc.) and water (water bottle). Please try to avoid sending candy or other sweets. Parents are reminded that peanuts and peanut bi-products are not to be sent in as we have students with life threatening allergies.
Your child will be eating lunch at school and will be given between 20 to 25 minutes to each their lunch. Please send a lunch that is ready to eat. The students do not have access to a microwave so warm meals should be preheated at home and stored in a thermos. Please keep a fork and spoon in their lunch box.
The children will be going to the library once a week (every Wednesday) and will be borrowing two books to bring home (one French and one English). All books are to be returned the following week.
Your child will be going outside for recess for approximately 30 minutes in the morning and 30 minutes after lunch. Please ensure your child is dressed in weather appropriate attire. Being dressed appropriately will allow for each child to have fun during our outdoor gross motor activities.
In the afternoon, your child will have a rest/quiet time for approximately 30-40 minutes. Your child will need a mat (i.e. yoga mat) and a small blanket. Rest/quiet time will give each child the opportunity to rest their bodies and minds.
Please ensure that your child brings his/her ‘Communication Folder’ to school each day. We send important messages and information in this folder and it is our main means of communication with parents/guardians. Thank you in advance.
